How to Read Your Birth Chart: Step-by-Step Guide

Getting Started: What You Need

Before you can read your birth chart, gather: 1. Birth year - Full year (YYYY) 2. Birth month - The lunar calendar month (important!) 3. Birth day - Lunar calendar day 4. Birth time - Hour and minute (preferably exact) 5. Birth location - City and country

Important: Saju uses the lunar calendar, not the Gregorian calendar. This is crucial for accuracy.

Step 1: Understand Your Four Pillars

Your birth chart displays as:

`` Year Pillar | Month Pillar | Day Pillar | Hour Pillar 甲子 | 乙丑 | 丙寅 | 丁卯 (Stem-Branch) | (Stem-Branch) | (Stem-Branch) | (Stem-Branch) `

Each pillar has two characters:
  • Top character = Heavenly Stem (10 variations)
  • Bottom character = Earthly Branch (12 variations)
  • Step 2: Identify Your Five Elements

Map each character to its element:

    Heavenly Stems:

  • 甲, 乙 = Wood
  • 丙, 丁 = Fire
  • 戊, 己 = Earth
  • 庚, 辛 = Metal
  • 壬, 癸 = Water
  • Earthly Branches:

  • 子, 亥 = Water
  • 寅, 卯 = Wood
  • 巳, 午 = Fire
  • 申, 酉 = Metal
  • 辰, 戌, 丑, 未 = Earth
  • Your Task: Count each element in your four pillars. Which appears most? Least?

Step 3: Calculate Your Day Master

The Day Stem (top character of Day Pillar) is your "Day Master" or core element.

This is THE most important element in saju analysis. Everything else is interpreted relative to your Day Master.

    Your Day Master determines:

  • Your core personality
  • What you need to balance
  • How to interpret other elements
  • Your interaction style with the world
  • Step 4: Analyze Element Balance

    Create a count:

    ` Your Five Elements:

  • Wood: 2
  • Fire: 1
  • Earth: 1
  • Metal: 2
  • Water: 2
  • `

    Interpretation:

  • Abundant elements (3+) = Dominant force, needs controlling
  • Moderate elements (1-2) = Balanced, natural
  • Lacking elements (0) = Weakness, need support
  • Example: If you have lots of Water but no Fire, you might struggle with courage and passion. You need Fire for balance.

    Step 5: Understand Element Relationships

    Elements interact in cycles:

Creation Cycle (Supporting): Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood

Control Cycle (Challenging): Wood → Earth ← Metal ← Fire ← Water ← Wood

    In your chart:

  • Elements in creation cycle = Harmonious
  • Elements in control cycle = Challenging but productive
  • Step 6: Read Each Pillar

    Year Pillar (Foundation)

    Look at the elements:
  • Strong Year Stem = Strong family background
  • Weak Year Stem = Less family support, more self-reliant
  • Harmony in Year Pillar = Stable childhood
  • Month Pillar (Character)

    This is your personality:
  • Month Stem = Your outer expression
  • Month Branch = Your inner emotional nature
  • Together = Your natural tendencies and talents
  • Day Pillar (Self & Relationships)

  • Day Stem = Your core self
  • Day Branch = How you appear in relationships
  • Branch element = Spouse/partner characteristics (traditionally)
  • Hour Pillar (Career & Destiny)

  • Hour Stem = Career potential
  • Hour Branch = Luck and fortune
  • Elements = Career aptitudes and opportunities
  • Step 7: Check Key Combinations

Certain combinations are auspicious or challenging:

    Auspicious Combinations:

  • 五合 (Five harmonies) - Certain branch pairs create harmony
  • 三合 (Three-way harmony) - Three branches in natural alliance
  • 冲 (Direct support) - Supporting element combinations
  • Challenging Combinations:

  • 冲 (Clash) - Opposing branches create friction
  • 害 (Harm) - Certain branches weaken each other
  • 破 (Breaking) - Conflicting forces
  • Step 8: Interpret Your Unique Pattern

    Now put it together:

    1. What's your Day Master (core element)? 2. What elements are abundant? Lacking? 3. What elements support your Day Master? 4. What elements challenge your Day Master? 5. What's your pillar pattern (which pillar is strongest)? 6. Are there lucky combinations?

This creates your unique "life blueprint."

    Step 9: Apply to Life

    Now understand:

  • Your strengths - What comes naturally (abundant elements)
  • Your challenges - What requires effort (lacking elements)
  • Your career path - What you're naturally suited for
  • Your relationships - How you naturally interact
  • Your luck timing - When opportunities are more likely
  • Example Reading

    Let's say your chart is:

    ` Year: Fire 火 | Month: Water 水 | Day: Wood 木 | Hour: Metal 金 ``

    Analysis:

  • Day Master: Wood (your core self)
  • Elements: Fire, Water, Wood, Metal (Fire-Water opposition, all present)
  • Balance: Good diversity, but Fire-Water create tension
  • Interpretation: Creative (Wood + Fire), emotional depth (Water), disciplined (Metal), balanced overall
  • Career: Creative field with structure (Metal discipline)
  • Personality: Expressive but emotionally complex
