The short answer
Saju (사주) literally means “four pillars.” It is a Korean tradition of arranging the year, month, day, and hour of birth into a chart of eight characters. Readers interpret the relationships among those characters to reflect on a person’s nature, relationships, and changing periods of life.
Saju is also called saju palja (사주팔자): four pillars, eight characters. The Academy of Korean Studies explains the name through the image of a house supported by four pillars. Each pillar contains two calendar signs, producing the eight characters.
What makes the four pillars?
The four pillars come from four coordinates of a birth moment:
- Year pillar: the year marker in the traditional calendar cycle
Each pillar combines one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. Ten stems and twelve branches move through a repeating sixty-part cycle. A complete chart therefore contains four stems and four branches rather than a single sign.
This is why two people born in the same year do not necessarily share the same Saju pattern. Their month, day, and hour pillars may be different, and the relationships among all four pillars matter.
The Five Elements are relationships, not a personality quiz
The stems and branches are associated with Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. These are better understood as five phases or kinds of movement than as literal materials.
A chart is not read by simply counting which element appears most. Season, position, yin and yang quality, and the way one part of the chart supports or restrains another all affect interpretation. A missing element is not automatically a flaw, and a dominant element is not automatically a strength.
Sajufy translates the five phases into accessible language such as growth, momentum, grounding, clarity, and reflection. These are reading aids, not scores of ability or worth.
What is the Day Master?
The Heavenly Stem of the day pillar is commonly called the Day Master or day stem. It gives the reader a point of reference: the rest of the chart is considered in relation to it.
There are ten possible Day Masters because each of the five phases appears in yin and yang form. The Day Master matters, but it is not the entire chart. Reducing Saju to “I am a Water type” loses the seasonal and relational structure that makes a Four Pillars reading specific.
What if you do not know your birth time?
You can still form the year, month, and day pillars. The hour pillar remains unknown, so a careful reading should say what cannot be concluded from it. It should not invent an hour or pretend that the chart is complete.
Sajufy marks the hour pillar as unknown and adapts the reading around the information that is available.
Is Saju a prediction?
Historically, Saju has been used as a form of divination. In Korea, birth information has also appeared in customs around matchmaking and New Year consultations. That cultural history does not require a modern reading to present the future as fixed.
Sajufy uses Saju as a structured language for self-reflection. A reading can offer a perspective on recurring tendencies, conditions that may feel supportive, and periods that invite attention. It cannot guarantee an event, diagnose health, promise financial outcomes, or replace professional judgment.
The most useful question is not “What must happen to me?” It is “What pattern does this reading help me notice, and what will I do with that awareness?”
